How Long Should a Good Artificial Tree Last?

Ask the question plainly — how long will this tree last? — and any honest answer has to start by refusing to give a single number. Not because the number is embarrassing, but because an artificial tree is not one object with one lifespan. It is a trunk, a frame, a canopy of foliage and a base, and those four things age at completely different speeds depending on where the tree stands. A tree in a shaded hotel stairwell and the same tree on an exposed seafront terrace are not the same purchase, and quoting them the same lifespan would be meaningless.

What is useful is knowing which part is the clock. Once you know that, you can judge any tree you are offered — and you can tell whether the one you already own has years left in it or needs attention.

The trunk is not what wears out

On a tree built around a preserved natural trunk, the trunk is the most stable part of the whole piece. It is real wood that has been dried and treated, so it has already done all the moving, splitting and settling it is going to do. Indoors it stays as it is. The bark does not fade in any way the eye registers, because it was never a saturated colour to begin with — grey-brown wood simply does not have far to go.

This is the quiet argument for a real trunk that has nothing to do with looks: a moulded plastic trunk carries sprayed or printed colour, and printed colour can go chalky over years. Real bark has no coating to lose.

The foliage is the clock

Leaves are where the ageing happens, and there are only three things that drive it: ultraviolet light, heat, and physical handling.

Indoors, away from a window that gets direct afternoon sun, foliage has an easy life. Very little UV reaches it, nothing flexes the leaves, and the only real change is dust — which is reversible. What eventually dates a tree in that position is usually the room around it, not the tree.

Outdoors is a different equation. Lebanese sun is strong and the season is long, and UV is cumulative: what matters is not how hot one afternoon was but how many hundreds of afternoons add up. That is the whole reason outdoor pieces are built with anti-UV foliage rather than indoor foliage moved outside. The stabilisers slow colour loss substantially, but nothing on a terrace is permanent the way an indoor piece is. Anyone who says otherwise is selling, not explaining.

The useful part: foliage is the one element that can be replaced without rebuilding the tree. A canopy can be re-leafed years later on the same trunk and the same frame, which means the expensive, characterful part of the tree is not what you are replacing.

The frame, the base and the thing that fails first in practice

Internally, a custom artificial tree is a metal armature carrying the branch structure, seated in a weighted base. Done properly this is the dullest part of the tree and you never think about it again.

Done badly, it is what actually ends a tree’s life. The failures we see on pieces brought in from elsewhere are rarely about leaves. They are a trunk that was never properly anchored and has started to rock, a base too light for a canopy that was later made wider, or thin branch wire that has taken a permanent sag because a cleaner leaned on it. None of that is UV. It is engineering, decided on the day the tree was built, and it is the main reason a cheap tree disappoints long before its foliage does.

The same applies to what it stands in. A planter sized to the tree it holds does structural work, not just decorative work — outdoors especially, where wind loading on a full canopy is real.

What actually shortens a tree’s life

  • Direct, unfiltered sun indoors. A tree parked in a south-facing glass corner is living outdoors as far as its leaves are concerned, without outdoor foliage to cope.
  • Years of dust left undisturbed. Dust does not damage foliage, but a thick grey film reads as age and, on fine leaves, eventually becomes hard to remove gently.
  • Being moved badly. More canopies are deformed in a single careless move than in a decade of standing still.
  • Wind with no anchoring. Outdoors, repeated flexing at the branch joints does more damage than sun.

Buy something that can be serviced

The honest way to think about lifespan is not “how many years” but “what happens in year six.” A tree built in a workshop you can walk into is a tree that can be re-leafed, re-anchored, re-based or reshaped later. Because we fabricate everything at our Jdeideh workshop, a piece that came from us can come back to us — and that, far more than any material claim, is what decides whether a tree is still in place a long time from now or quietly replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Do artificial trees last longer indoors or outdoors?

Indoors, clearly, and the gap is large. Indoor foliage out of direct sun changes very slowly; outdoor foliage is fighting cumulative UV every summer, which is why outdoor pieces are built with anti-UV material from the start.

Can a tree be refreshed instead of replaced?

Usually yes. Foliage is replaceable on an existing trunk and frame, and bases and anchoring can be reworked. It is worth asking before assuming a tired tree is finished.

Does a preserved natural trunk need any upkeep?

Indoors, essentially none beyond dusting. It is treated, dry and stable — it is the foliage that asks for occasional attention, not the wood.

How long does a custom tree take to make?

Allow roughly 20–25 working days for a custom build, depending on size and foliage. Pieces already in the showroom can go out sooner.

Come and press on one

The fastest way to judge how long a tree will last is to handle it. Our showroom in Jdeideh, facing St John Greek Orthodox church, has finished pieces standing on their own bases — push a branch, look at the joint, lift a leaf.

Send us a photo of the spot and the ceiling height on WhatsApp, or reach us through the contact page, and we will tell you what we would build and what it will need from you over the years. We deliver and install across Lebanon, and we are rated 5.0 on Google.
