Artificial Palm Trees for Resorts and Outdoor Spaces

Salt air is the quiet enemy of a resort garden. It is not the heat that finishes off planting around a pool deck or a seafront terrace — it is the combination of salt, reflected glare off water and tile, wind that never really stops, and irrigation that reaches some plants and not others. Real palms can cope with a lot of that, but only where their roots have depth, drainage and a gardener. On a concrete roof, in a raised planter, or under a pergola that blocks half the sun, they slowly stop looking like the photograph that sold the design.

That is the gap artificial palms are built for. Done badly, they are the most obviously fake tree in the catalogue. Done properly, they are one of the few pieces that can hold a large outdoor space on their own, year after year, with no water line and no replanting.

Why palms are the hardest trees to fake — and what gives them away

An olive tree forgives a lot. Its canopy is a mass of small leaves, so the eye reads density and silhouette rather than individual parts. A palm is the opposite. Its whole identity sits in a handful of very large, very visible fronds, each one a repeated structure of long leaflets off a central spine. There is nowhere to hide.

Three things give a bad artificial palm away immediately. The first is frond stiffness: real fronds arch and droop at the tip under their own weight, so fronds moulded as one rigid piece stand out like plastic fans. The second is uniformity — identical fronds at identical angles, evenly spaced around the crown, which never happens in nature. The third is the trunk. A palm trunk is a record of every frond it has shed, a spiral of scars and fibre that changes character from base to crown; a smooth sleeve with a printed pattern reads as a prop.

So the work is in those three places: fronds with internal wire so they can be set individually and arched by hand, a crown built with deliberate irregularity in angle and spacing, and a trunk with real texture and the right taper. We build in our own workshop in Jdeideh, which is the only reason those decisions are ours to make rather than whatever arrived in a container.

Where artificial palms earn their place

They are not a substitute for a well-planted garden. They are the answer for places that cannot have one:

  • Pool decks and roof terraces — where everything sits on a slab, planter depth is limited, and nobody wants organic debris in the filtration.
  • Hotel entrances and drop-off zones — high visibility, constant foot traffic, and a strong incentive for the view to look identical in February and August. Our hotel and resort greenery work is mostly this kind of brief.
  • Indoor atria and double-height lobbies — a real palm needs far more light than a glazed atrium actually delivers once the glass is coated.
  • Villa entrances and driveways — where a pair of matched palms is wanted and nature declines to supply two identical trees.

What “outdoor” actually requires

Outdoor is not a label; it is a specification, and it changes two things in particular.

Anti-UV foliage

Lebanese sun will strip colour out of foliage that was only ever meant for an interior, and the fading is uneven — the top of the crown goes first, which looks worse than if the whole tree had faded together. Outdoor pieces need anti-UV foliage from the start. Retrofitting is not a thing.

Wind and anchoring

A palm is a sail on a pole. The canopy catches wind high up, which means the load at the base is much larger than the weight of the tree suggests. Seafront and rooftop installations get weighted or bolted bases, and the planter becomes part of the structure rather than a decorative pot placed around it — which is why we prefer to build the planter and the tree as one considered pair. That planter also needs drainage — an outdoor pot still fills with rain — and materials that will not warp through a full Lebanese summer.

Sizing: the number that matters is clearance, not height

People specify palms by trunk height. Then the tree arrives and the problem is spread — a crown reaching further than expected, into a walkway, a pergola beam, or a sightline that mattered. For interiors, measure the finished ceiling height and subtract real clearance. For exteriors, map the canopy diameter on the floor first, because that circle is what people walk around.

Because everything is made to size here, the canopy can be planned around the space instead of the space being rearranged around the tree. That holds for a single specimen or for a full artificial landscaping scheme where palms sit alongside lower planting and ground cover.

Lead time and what to send us

Custom trees run about 20–25 working days, and the best way to start is the least formal: a photograph of the space, the ceiling height or the open sky above it, and a note on whether it is indoor, covered or fully exposed. From that we can tell you honestly whether a palm is the right piece or whether something else suits the space better. If you are nearby, the showroom in Jdeideh — facing St. John Greek Orthodox church — lets you see frond quality and trunk texture at arm’s length.

FAQ

Can artificial palm trees stay outdoors all year in Lebanon?

Yes, when they are specified for it: anti-UV foliage, a weighted or fixed base, and a planter with drainage. Interior-grade pieces moved outside will fade and loosen.

How tall can you make them?

They are made to any size. The practical limits are usually access — doorways, lifts, stair turns — and clearance in the finished space, which is worth checking before the height is fixed.

Do the fronds need cleaning?

Outdoors, rain does most of it. Indoors, dust settles on the upper surface of each frond and is best removed with a soft dry brush or a cloth, wiping along the leaflets rather than across them.

Can you match a pair?

Yes — matched pairs for entrances are a common request, and building both in the same workshop at the same time is what makes the match possible.
